Explore The History of Miami's Top Golf Club

60 years of passion and respect for the game of golf at Trump National Golf Club Doral

Previous host of the PGA TOUR for 55 consecutive years and two-time host of the LIV Golf League Team Championship, Trump National Doral Miami is the premier golf resort destination in South Florida. Trump Doral is home to four uniquely designed courses, including the famous Blue Monster, whose 18th hole was traditionally ranked as one of the most difficult on the PGA TOUR. It is no surprise that virtually every great name in golf has had a moment of personal triumph on this world-class course (Jack Nicklaus won twice, Greg Norman three times, and Tiger Woods four).

Steeped in history, Trump Doral has claimed many iconic moments for 60 years. Through various transformations and professional events, many milestones have been marked at Trump Doral - we invite you to explore our story.

1959

Alfred Kaskel (Carol Management) bought 2,400 acres of Swampland that would later become Doral Hotel and Country Club, now Trump National Doral. Favored by the professionals and Hollywood A-listers, the resort opened its doors on January 12, 1962 with the Blue Course, Red Course and a par-three Green Course.

1962

The first PGA Tour event, the Doral Country Club Open Invitational, was held in 1962. A dramatic duel between the veteran, Billy Casper, and the rookie, Paul Bondeson, Casper won by a single stroke with a score of 283, -5 under par. The $50,000 purse, personally fronted by Alfred Kaskel, was supposed to be $35,000. However, Kaskel was determined to attract all of the top golfers and upped the ante. His efforts paid off resulting in a parade of golf greats, including Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Sammy Snead, and Jimmy Demaret competing at his inaugural tournament. In 1964, Billy Casper became Doral's first repeat winner by finishing one shot ahead of Jack Nicklaus.

1972, 1975

Considered as one of the greatest golfers of all time, Jack Nicklaus (AKA The Golden Bear), won the 1972 and 1975 Doral Eastern Open. Nicklaus played in 39 out of the first 40 tournaments hosted at the Doral.

1979-1984

One of golf’s leading figures from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s, Seve Ballesteros served as the PGA Touring Professional at Doral. Regarded as the greatest Continental European golfer of all time, Ballesteros won 90 international tournaments in his career, including five major championships. In 1980, Seve won The Masters, the first win by a European player, and at the time, he was the youngest winner of the tournament, at age 23. He won wearing his Doral sweater.

1990, 1993, 1996

Greg Norman, The Great White Shark, shot a course-record 62, overcame a seven-shot deficit, forced a playoff with Paul Azinger, Mark Calcavecchia and Tim Simpson and sunk a 22-foot eagle chip on the first sudden-death hole to win the 1990 Doral Ryder Open at -15 under par. With Norman playing the Blue Monster for the first time in six years, this was an absolute whirlwind final round and one of the Doral’s most remarkable tournaments. The Shark also emerged victorious in the 1993 and 1996 Doral Ryder Open tournaments.

1996

The first major renovations took place on the Blue Monster. When the renovation was completed, the Blue had 117 bunkers, compared to its original 106 bunkers. The new design received unfavorable reviews by the pros. Just three years later, several bunkers were removed, bringing the Blue Monster back to a more traditional design.

2005-2007

Tiger Woods won three years in a row at Doral. In 2005, he won the ‘Duel at Doral’ against Phil Mickelson on the Blue Monster before a sellout crowd. In 2006, Tiger defended his title at Doral, but the headlines were about the record breaking attendance of the tournament, which reached 145,000. The following year, Tiger Woods was victorious once again at Doral, but 2007 marked the end of the Doral Open era and ushered in the World Golf Championship (WGC) era at Doral, which spanned the next 10 years attracting the top 76 golfers and paying out the highest stakes. In 2013, Tiger reclaimed the top spot at the WGC Championship making him the only 4 time winner at Doral.

2012

On June 12, 2012, The Trump Organization purchased Doral Golf Resort & Spa. The Trump Organization dramatically restores luxury to this iconic resort, including renovating the four championship golf courses (Blue Monster, Red Tiger, Silver Fox and Golden Palm).

2012

Following the dramatic renovation at Trump National Doral, the WGC Cadillac Championship crowned some of the best golfers in the game including Justin Rose, Patrick Reed, Dustin Johnson and Adam Scott.

2018

In 2018, Trump National Doral welcomed the PGA Tour Latinoamerica Tour Championship - Shell Championship.
